Classic Sailboat Curious: A Shipwright's Tale

and more interesting sailing finds to start your week

AHOY! This is I'dRatherBeSailing, the sailing newsletter written by sailors who dress as pirates, even when it's not a holiday. To all my Captains out there, Happy Halloween, and don't forget the rum.

Today we're keeping the theme classic:

  • For the Classic Curious: How to be a Shipwright, a free course

  • Spotted: World's Largest Sailing Vessel

  • Cruising the web: Electric steel, and a Greek steal

The Shipwright Course

If you've walked past an old wooden boat on the docks and said out-loud "pheeew, she's beautiful", this might be for you! (The pheeeew soft whistle is a very important, internationally recognized signal of Other Boat Appreciation).

The course is intended to promote awareness of the Shipwright's trade, and even prepare people for the eventual title of Shipwright. Imagine adding That to your sailing resume.

The lowdown, and some highlights:

  • No pre-requisites, free, and in English.

  • Register by November 2nd by emailing here [email protected]

  • All Online

  • Beginning November - December

  • Twice Weekly, 2 Hour lessons

  • 20 Hours Live Streaming, 1.5hrs pre recorded

Ok, now here's where things take a unique tack. You might have glanced over the picture above. Look again. That is a VR walk-through of the boat from the first picture.

Part of the Shipwright's course is going to cover the use of augmented reality in ship building. However they plan to use it, I'm excited. This is a marriage of the cutting edge, and the classic, and however it turns out, it should be interesting.

I'dRatherBeSailing is signing up for the course, and will be reporting back to the main deck with any choice takeaways. An article with the complete course syllabus is here

Speaking of wooden boats...

World's Largest Wooden Sailing Vessel

You know it's a big ship when reporters call it a vessel. She was spotted making a stop in Malta, on her way to Spain. Read more about her journey here
