Impossible Dream:

making sailing accessible, plus the world's largest cat

Boat dreams.

It’s the rockin’ of the ocean.

It’ll mess all your sleep patterns and sh*t up, I swear to God.

-Roadhouse (2024)

We’ve been chuckling over that quote all week. The new Roadhouse remake has just enough high-seas sailing hijinx and nautical quips to keep any sailor amused. Definitely worth a watch. Anyways, on to the news.

In today’s letter:

  • Impossible Dream: Making sailing accessible.

  • World’s Largest Cat: The Floating Museum launches.

  • Race Updates: Chilly leg out of China.

  • Sailing Snippets: Blow your own sail, Last Call Clipper, Maltese Cheese, Mast Measuring Contest.

Impossible Dream

Speaking of boat dreams… The Impossible Dream is a 60’ Catamaran retrofitted to be fully accessible for all levels of mobility. The non-profit partners with over 20 rehabilitation hospitals and disability advocacy groups to take over 1800 people sailing every year. World’s Largest Cat

Art Explorer

Hercules, a liger (lion-tiger hybrid), is the world's largest living cat, according to Guinness World Records.

Oh, you meant catamaran. Well, in that case, it’s the ArtExplorer, a 46.5m catamaran that was just delivered and is moored in Malta. The boat’s mission is to sail around and use her flybridge as an art museum and conference space. She can accommodate up to 2,000 people a day on board, and the interior exhibition was curated in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre.

The pictures of Art Explorer look like she could be at home in a Bond movie, with dark wood finishes and a modern art-deco flair. She was designed by Axel de Beaufort and Guillaume Verdier, who is known for blending traditional materials with modern lines in his nautical architecture.

Race Updates

Arriving in Qingdao © Clipper Race

Clipper Race 10: The 10th race kicked off this week from Qingdao, China to Seattle. The 5,340nm race will cross the North Pacific, known for some of the most treacherous and remote waters on the planet. The teams will battle 10-meter waves, 80-knot winds, and sub-zero temperatures, at times closer to the International Space Station than land.

Sailing Snippets

Blow Your Own Sail?: No, it’s not like tooting your own horn. And no, it’s not possible, but Mark Rober got about 26 million views proving it with a fan and a sail. Skip to 6:30, where the science fun begins.

Last Call Clipper: If you’ve ever wanted to sail the Pacific on a classic Clipper, here’s your chance. The Stad Amsterdam is currently on her world tour and just docked in San Francisco. She embarks on a Pacific crossing next week to Tokyo, with a quick stop in Honolulu. The trip takes about 45 days, and guests get to learn and participate in all aspects of sailing during the voyage.

Maltese Cheese: Who doesn’t love looking at mega-sail-boats when we should be working. The new interior of the Maltese Falcon has finally been revealed to us mere sailing plebs, and is here for your scrolling pleasure. Of course, we were also as curious as you are about how much a week charter costs. The low season starts at $535,000. Now that’s some serious Maltese cheese.

Mast Measuring Contest: Not to be outdone in the mast measuring contest, Australian superyacht builder Echo just announced they are building the world’s next biggest catamaran, which will clock in at 57 meters.

That’s it for today. Stay safe out there, and we’ll ketch ya next week.
